5x5 Cube for Beginners - cheat sheet

Reduction method: centres (cross + x-centres), three-piece edges, like a 3x3. Full course with animations and simulator: strefa-kostek.pl/en/kursy

1Move notation

R L U D F B - one outer layer, quarter turn clockwise, looking at that face. 2R = only the second layer from the right (direction as R), Uw Dw = two layers at once (Dw turns like D). x y z = whole-cube rotation like R, U, F. Order: centres (cross, then x-centres) → edges → like a 3x3 (outer moves only). The face colour is set by its fixed centre.

2Centre cross

Four t-centres next to the fixed centre (x-centres do not matter yet).

topfree back t-centre (U)
frontt-centre in the right t-centre spot (F)

2R U 2R'

2R' D2 2R left column of the bottom ↔ right column of the front (from the bottom to the front; only while the bottom is not solved)

3X-centres

Cross done - you insert four x-centres.

topfree front-right x-centre (U)
frontx-centre in the top-right corner (F)

2R U 2R' U 2R U2 2R'

From the bottom: x-centre in the left column of the bottom, 2R' D2 2R, then F.

4Centre order

  1. White fixed centre on top. Another side to the front: y.
  2. x2, yellow on top, white on the bottom. No moves from the bottom.
  3. z: white on the left, yellow on the right - they stay on the sides. Rotations only x and y2.
  4. Centre on top (colour of its fixed centre): from the front, from the bottom, from the back (y2).
  5. x, the next one on top: from the front and from the bottom. Do not touch the back any more.
  6. x, the next one only from the front - the last solves itself.

5Edges

Midge + two wings with the same colours.

  • Unsolved edge at the front left; the pattern = its midge.
  • Wing into the front-right edge: from the top U… R', from the bottom D… R, from the back R2 / B2 R2.
  • Front colour different from the midge? R U R' F R' F' R
  • Wing at the bottom: Uw' R U R' F R' F' R Uw
  • At the top: Dw R U R' F R' F' R Dw'

Wrong wing in the left edge: first bring any unsolved edge to the right. The right edge must not be finished.

6Last edge

Parity: both wings swapped (pattern colour - other - colour). Edge at the top front:

2R2 B2 U2 2L U2
2R' U2 2R U2 F2
2R F2 2L' B2 2R2

2L turns like L - the opposite way to 2R.

7Continue like a 3x3

Yellow on top, outer moves only (R, U, F…). No parity.

  • daisy → white cross
  • white corners: R U R' U'
  • second layer: U R U' R' U' F' U F / U' L' U L U F U' F'
  • yellow cross: F R U R' U' F'
  • yellow edges: R U R' U R U2 R' U
  • corners into place: U R U' L' U R' U' L
  • corner twisting: R' D' R D

!When something goes wrong

  • Mixed-up layers: 2R = only the second layer, Uw/Dw = two, R = only the outer one. 2L, Dw and D turn like L and D.
  • A piece escapes from the top: before the algorithm the back t-centre (cross) or the front-right x-centre (x-centres) must be free.
  • The cross breaks while doing x-centres: for x-centres only 2R U 2R' U 2R U2 2R'. Before turning an inner layer, align the others.
Letter = quarter turn clockwise, looking at that face; ' = the other way; 2 = half turn. Uw, Dw = two layers at once, 2R = only the second layer from the right (direction as R). StrefaKostek.pl
