Blindfold: blindfolds and noise reduction for solving the cube blind

In blindfolded solving (BLD), you first memorize the cube, then put on a blindfold and solve it from memory without looking. For training and competing you need two things: a blindfold that blocks out all light, and something to muffle the noise while you memorize. In this category you'll find blindfold accessories that take care of both.

Choosing a blindfold: what to look for

A blindfold must cover your eyes completely, including around the nose, where ordinary flat sleep masks often leave a gap. 3D blindfolds have contoured eye cups, so the fabric doesn't rest directly on your eyelids and the blindfold fits more closely to your face. At WCA competitions every competitor brings their own blindfold, and the delegate may check it before use. That's why it's best to have a tested blindfold before your first competition rather than looking for one at the venue.

Earplugs or noise-cancelling earmuffs?

During memorization, the biggest distractions are conversations, applause and timer sounds from neighboring stations. WCA regulations allow non-electronic earplugs and earmuffs. However, you may not use electronic headphones or earbuds.

• Earplugs are light and fit in your pocket, but not everyone finds them comfortable for longer periods.
• Noise-cancelling earmuffs are worn over your head like headphones. The HS2018 Noise-Cancelling Earmuffs weigh about 111 g and muffle the noise around you. They're not just for BLD: you can also use them in other events if the noise in the hall makes it hard to focus.

If you want to wear earmuffs together with a blindfold, try it at home first. The headband shouldn't shift the blindfold or open a gap near your eyes.

Cubes for blindfolded events at competitions

In BLD events at WCA competitions, the cube must not have logos, textures or markings that could help identify pieces. So before competing, check whether the logo sticker on the center of your cube can be removed or replaced. That way you won't have to change anything right before your attempt.
