The FTO (Face Turning Octahedron) is an eight-sided puzzle in which each of the eight triangular faces turns. This category contains classic FTOs in the standard version, the kind that will be used at competitions. In June 2026, the WCA added the FTO to its list of official events and removed Clock from it. The FTO can be competed in at WCA competitions from 2 January 2027 in the Average of 5 format. It is the first new event since 2014, when Skewb was added.
The cheapest options are models without magnets, such as the basic SengSo FTO. They have no layer alignment system at all, so you have to finish every move precisely. Still, it's an inexpensive way to find out whether the FTO is for you. In magnetic versions, such as the SengSo FTO M or the QiYi Magnetic FTO, magnets help the layers snap into place. This makes it easier to avoid overshooting and misaligned faces, which would otherwise block your next moves.
The DianSheng FTO Magnetic (from the Galaxy series) was the first mass-produced magnetic FTO. It played a big part in making this event popular among speedcubers. The next step is models with Ball-Core, meaning extra magnets between the corners and the core: the DaYan FTO Magnetic + Ball-Core and the DianSheng Galaxy FTO NEO. Ball-Core holds the pieces more firmly on their axes, so the puzzle is more stable during fast turning and less prone to popping. In the NEO, DianSheng also changed the core magnets and rounded the internal edges of the pieces to improve corner cutting compared with the original Galaxy FTO. The Ball Core LE version is a limited, transparent edition of the same model.
Models with Ball-Core offer more stability, but if you are just learning the FTO, a cheaper magnetic version is perfectly enough.
