A magnetic Face Turning Octahedron from DaYan with magnets in the core (Ball-Core). According to users, it practically never pops, is stable and has a smooth feel. Stickerless bright version with frosted plastic, no UV.

The FTO (Face Turning Octahedron) is an octahedron in which each of the eight triangular faces turns. The DaYan FTO Magnetic + Ball-Core is a magnetic version of this puzzle with magnets in the core (Ball-Core). It was released in autumn 2024 and quickly became one of the most popular FTOs for speedsolving. Our version is stickerless bright with frosted plastic and no UV coating.
Older FTOs often struggled with popping and stability. In the DaYan, this problem has practically disappeared. Users agree that the puzzle hardly ever pops, even after several hundred solves. The feel is smooth, slightly heavier and more stable than the DianSheng FTO, and according to reviewers, corner cutting is noticeably better than on that competitor. The magnets help the layers settle into place but are not overwhelming, so the puzzle stays fast and gives you good control.
There is another side to the reviews too. Some people feel that the magnetic pull in the middle of a move slows turning down a little. The puzzle can be tight straight out of the box and usually performs better once loosened. It also responds less well to lube than the DianSheng.
The FTO is noticeably bigger than a standard 3x3 cube. Many cubers feel that the DaYan's size is borderline and that a few millimetres less would be more comfortable. If you have smaller hands, e.g. children, keep this in mind. The frosted plastic offers moderate grip and doesn't pick up fingerprints the way glossy finishes do.
This puzzle is for people who solve the 3x3 well, ideally also know the 4x4 or Megaminx, and are looking for a new challenge. Solving the FTO requires its own method, and even orienting the octahedron can be tricky at first. If you want to train the FTO seriously for time, you get a stable base that performs well without an elaborate setup. For a child's first puzzle, it's better to choose something simpler, such as a Pyraminx or Skewb.
