Wooden puzzles offer a completely different kind of fun than speedcubing. There are no algorithms and no timing, just a riddle to solve: how the pieces are connected, in what order to take them apart and how to put them back together. We've gathered several different types of wooden puzzles here, along with wooden cube-shaped lamps that make a great decoration for cubing fans.
Wooden Cube Light lamps are designed to look like a puzzle cube and work as a decoration for your desk or shelf. There are two versions: the USB-powered Wooden 3x3 Cube Light, shaped like a 3x3 cube and powered via USB, and the Battery-operated Wooden 2x2 Cube Light, shaped like a 2x2 cube and powered by batteries. The battery version doesn't need a cable, so it's easier to place anywhere you like. The USB version works well wherever a power source is close at hand, for example next to your computer.
It's a good idea to start with the type of challenge you enjoy. A snake cube quickly shows you what it's all about and works well as a first puzzle. Burr puzzles such as the Kong Ming Lock require more attempts and memorizing the steps, so they suit people who like to spend longer on a single problem. Puzzle boxes will appeal to those who enjoy discovering a hidden mechanism.
Wooden puzzles are also a great gift idea, even for someone who doesn't solve cubes. You don't need to know any methods to get started, and a finished, assembled puzzle looks great on a desk.
