Fingerboard

Fingerboard: a skateboard for your fingers

A fingerboard is a working miniature skateboard. You do skatepark tricks on it with two fingers: your index and middle finger. In this category you'll find single boards, sets of several fingerboards and bundles with obstacles, from a ramp to a mini skatepark. Most products come from the brands Sbego and YJ.

How to choose a fingerboard?
Basic boards are about 9 cm long, which is roughly 1:8 scale compared to a regular skateboard. The deck is plastic and covered with sandpaper that imitates griptape, and the trucks have metal parts. That's all you need to learn ollies and flips on your desk. Multi-board sets are also easy to share between siblings or friends. If you want a board that's closer to the real thing, go for the Fingerboard Pro by Sbego. It has a deck made of 5 layers of maple wood, foam griptape and wheels with sealed bearings that roll more smoothly. You assemble the board yourself (a screwdriver is included) and keep it in a plastic box. We also offer the Sbego fingerboard longboard, 120 mm long, with spare wheels.

Flat or obstacles?
You can do tricks on the flat, meaning a flat surface, or on obstacles. Most often these are miniature skateboard ramps. A set with a ramp, track or skatepark gives you a place to ride right away. The Sbego track has storage compartments underneath that open up for boards and accessories. The stand from another set holds up to three boards and can be hung on the wall. Board graphics in sets are random.

What is fingerboarding about
Tricks are done almost the same way as on a skateboard, with a few exceptions. When it comes to grabs, mostly the basic ones count, such as the indy grab or nosegrab, and whole-hand spins of more than 360 degrees are rare. It's not just about the trick itself. Flow, a clean landing on the board, height and the length of the run-up matter too. That's why everyone develops their own style: some do tricks low to the ground, others catch them high in the air. There are tournaments, and for many people fingerboarding is a hobby and a way of expressing themselves. Some paint their own decks and obstacles. Many people also collect fingerboard decks, and some of them are highly valued today.

Miniature boards were made at home long before mass production began. In 1985, Lance Mountain showed them to skaters in the Powell Peralta video "Future Primitive". In 1998, Steven Asher from Southern California couldn't skate because of the rain, so he cut a miniature skateboard out of cardboard. He refined the design together with his father, and this idea grew into the mass-produced Tech Deck fingerboards.
