At WCA competitions, times are measured with the StackMat timer, which is made by SpeedStacks, an American company that started out in a different discipline: sport stacking, the fast stacking and unstacking of cup pyramids. Today SpeedStacks makes sport stacking cups, timers, mats and other accessories for the sport. Their timers and mats are also standard equipment at official speedcubing competitions.

The company was founded in 1998 by Bob Fox, an elementary school PE teacher in Colorado, and his wife Jill. In 2001 Bob Fox founded the organization that became the WSSA (World Sport Stacking Association), the international sport stacking federation. SpeedStacks is its main sponsor. The brand's cups have official WSSA status, and they are the only cups allowed at WSSA competitions.

StackMat timers in speedcubing

StackMat became the official WCA timer soon after the WCA was founded in 2004. To stop the timer, you have to place both hands on the sensors. This makes the end of a solve unambiguous, and the cube doesn't have to land on the timer. The WCA currently allows G3, G4 and G5 timers. The G2 was withdrawn in 2023.

The G5 StackMat Pro Timer was released in 2021. It measures time to 0.001 s, has a data port for connecting an external display and offers two modes: 2-pad (start and stop with your fingers on two sensors) and 4-pad (fingers and thumbs). You switch modes by holding RESET for 5 seconds. The WCA has announced that from 2 January 2027, official attempts will be timed only with the G5 timer in 4-pad mode. If you want to practice the same way you'll solve at competitions, choose the G5. The older G4 will still time your practice solves, but it doesn't have a 4-pad mode.

Speedcubers usually buy a timer with a mat to have the same setup at home as at competitions. The cups are great if you want to try sport stacking. Bob Fox started by teaching it to kids in PE classes, so it's also a good idea for school activities and fun at home.
