Speed Stacks Pro Gen 5 Set: G5 Timer and Bag

At WCA competitions, times are usually measured with Speed Stacks timers. This set lets you train at home on the same equipment. Inside you'll find the Speed Stacks G5 StackMat Pro timer, the fifth generation of the brand's timers, introduced in 2021, and the Speed Stacks Gear Bag. The timer works for both speedcubing and sport stacking. The mat is not included in the set.

How the G5 Pro timer works

The timer measures time to an accuracy of 0.001 s. It has two modes: 2-pad for cubes and 4-pad for sport stacking. To switch modes, hold the RESET button for 5 seconds. In 2-pad mode, the G5 works exactly like the previous G4. You place both hands on the pads, and timing starts when you lift them. To stop the time, you put your hands back down. WCA regulations allow Gen 5 timers only in 2-pad mode. This means you train at home with exactly the same start and stop you'll face at competitions.

What's new in the G5

• Press-and-hold RESET and POWER buttons. They only respond after about half a second. Slamming your hands down to stop the timer won't erase your time or switch the timer off.
• Reinforced buttons that don't wear out with heavy use.
• Data port for connecting a Speed Stacks tournament display. The socket is on the underside, so the cable doesn't get in the way while you solve and is hard to pull out by accident. The cable is not included in the set.
• Snap-in mount for the G5 mat. When clipped into the mat, the timer doesn't slide around or fall off, even when hit harder.

Mat compatibility

Because of the new snap system, the G5 timer does not fit Gen 3 and Gen 4 mats. If you want to use it with a mat, choose a G5 mat. Without a mat, you can place the timer directly on the table.

Gear Bag

The bag has a carrying handle. According to user reviews, it fits the timer, a mat and a few cubes, so it's easy to pack your gear for practice, club meetings or competitions.

Who is it for?

For cubers who want to time their solves on the same timer used at competitions, and for anyone preparing for their first WCA competition. It's also useful in schools and sport stacking clubs, since one timer covers both disciplines. A note for parents: this is not a cube, but a timer for measuring solve times. It's most useful for a child who can already solve the cube on their own and wants to track their progress.
