A cube left lying loose on a shelf or in a backpack collects dust and dirt. Over time, this gets into the mechanism and changes how the cube turns. Cube boxes and cases protect your cube at home and on the way to competitions. Some of them also work as a display case for your collection or as a cover for practicing inspection, just like at competitions.
The simplest option is a clear plastic box, such as the Z pp-box from Zcube for 5.7 cm 3x3 cubes. It protects your cube from dust and dirt, and it is small and inexpensive. That makes it a good choice if you have several cubes and want to keep each one separately. For storing and showing off cubes on a shelf, there are also the Stackable Cube Box and the PET Cube Storage/Display Box. Before you buy, check the product description to see which cube size the box is designed for. 3x3 cubes from different manufacturers have slightly different dimensions, and larger NxN cubes need their own boxes.
Some boxes don't just protect your cube, they also look great. The Cube Robot Box is shaped like a robot. There is also the Cube Robot Box for 4x4 5x5 version for larger cubes that won't fit in a standard 3x3 box. The DianSheng Gear Box has a gear mechanism, so even opening the box is fun. Kids often like boxes like these more than plain clear ones.
The DianSheng Cube Display Box is available in two versions: Capsule and UFO. In both, the clear cover lifts off the base and goes back on, held in place by magnets. It's a great way to display one special cube: your main, the cube you set your personal best with, or a model from your collection.
At WCA competitions, the scrambled cube sits under a cover. Competitors only see it when their 15-second inspection begins. The MoYu Cube Cover and SK Cube Cover let you practice this at home. Someone scrambles the cube and covers it, then you lift the cover and start your inspection with the timer right away. This makes it easier to get used to competition conditions and to make better use of the time to plan your cross. Between sessions, the cover also keeps dust off the cube on your desk.
