This category features octahedron-shaped puzzles. They differ in the way they turn. FTO (Face Turning Octahedron) turns by its faces: each of the eight triangular faces is a separate layer. CTO (Corner Turning Octahedron) turns around its corners, i.e. the vertices of the shape. We also offer FTO variants: 2x2 FTO, Master FTO and enlarged versions.
For years, FTO was one of the most popular unofficial events. In June 2026, the WCA announced that it is adding FTO to the list of official events. FTO competitions are set to start on 2 January 2027, and the result will be the average of five solves (Ao5), as in most events. You will find models designed for competing in the FTO WCA subcategory.
The most important difference between models is magnets. Classic versions, such as the QiYi FTO or SengSo FTO, have no magnets and turn more freely. Magnetic versions (QiYi Magnetic FTO, SengSo FTO M, DianSheng FTO Magnetic) hold the layer in the aligned position more noticeably. This makes it easier to avoid lockups, i.e. the puzzle jamming when one of the layers is not turned all the way.
The DaYan FTO Magnetic + Ball-Core and DianSheng Galaxy FTO NEO also have a Ball-Core, i.e. magnets in the centre of the puzzle. They help stabilize the whole puzzle during fast turning. This design is useful mainly for people who practise for time. For casual solving, an FTO without magnets is perfectly sufficient, and some people simply prefer a looser feel.
A good way to start with FTO is the 2x2 FTO, e.g. the DianSheng Magnetic 2x2 FTO. It has fewer pieces, so it is easier to understand how an octahedron moves. The Master FTO by MF8 has one more layer than a regular FTO. It is a challenge for people who already know the standard version. The ZePuzzles 11cm Big FTO is an enlarged version of the FTO, better suited to collectors than to speedsolving.
Our CTO range includes the DianSheng Corner Turning Octahedron in versions with and without magnets in the core, the DaYan Octahedron and the ZePuzzles Master CTO. Among the unusual designs, we have the Timur Gear Corner Turning Octahedron by Calvin's Puzzle, an octahedron with a gear mechanism. CTO is not a WCA event, so these puzzles are bought more as a change from cubes and for collections than for competitions.
