DianSheng Magnetic 2x2 FTO is a magnetic octahedron-shaped puzzle (FTO, short for Face Turning Octahedron) from the Galaxy series. It is the 2x2 version of the popular FTO. The same shape and mechanism are also known as the Skewb Diamond. The puzzle is stickerless, and the magnets help each move settle into place. At just 53 g, it feels noticeably light in your hands.

How the 2x2 FTO works

Each face turn of the octahedron moves half of the puzzle. There are only two types of pieces: 6 corners and 8 face centers, so there are no edges. In practice, turning feels a bit like a Pyraminx, while solving is similar to a Skewb. This puzzle is equivalent to the Skewb, so you can carry over methods you know from the Skewb. That makes it a good choice for your first FTO. It is much easier than the full 3x3 FTO, yet it still shows you how a puzzle of this shape behaves.

Feel and ergonomics

Each face has subtle indentations that improve grip and help you control the puzzle during faster turning. Users usually describe it as light, fast and smooth. Opinions on the magnet strength vary. Some find it just right, while others consider the magnets rather weak for very fast solving. If you like a strong, distinct click, keep this in mind. If you prefer lighter magnets, you will most likely be happy with it.

Who is it for?

For those who already know the Skewb or Pyraminx and want to try something new without learning a whole method from scratch. It also works well as a more affordable, accessible introduction to the world of FTO and as an addition to a collection of DianSheng Galaxy series puzzles. The puzzle is not an official WCA event, so it is mainly for practising for fun and for unofficial competitions.
