The Megaminx WCA is the classic dodecahedron with 12 pentagonal faces, the same version that is solved at World Cube Association competitions. In this category you will find budget, magnetic and flagship models with the MagLev system. They come from QiYi, YJ, MoYu, ShengShou, GAN, YuXin, DaYan and DianSheng. A megaminx has many layers, and a single solve takes longer than on a 3x3. That is why, besides speed, a comfortable grip and how much the puzzle tires your hands also matter.
To learn how to solve it, a simple model is enough, for example the ShengShou Megaminx, QiYi QiHeng or MoYu Meilong. Many inexpensive megaminxes also come in a magnetic version, marked with the letter M or the word Magnetic. Examples include the MoYu Meilong M, QiYi QiHeng Magnetic, YJ YuHu V2 Magnetic and YuXin Little Magic V3 Magnetic. The magnets hold the layer in place after a turn. As a result, overshooting (turning a layer too far) happens less often, and you don't have to keep realigning the faces. If you plan to practice regularly, you will usually switch to a magnetic version quickly. The price difference between the basic and magnetic versions is usually small.
At the other end of the range is the GAN Megaminx V2 MagLev, also available in a UV version. In the MagLev system, repelling magnets replace the springs. This gives a lighter, bouncier feel than a classic mechanism. The UV coating creates a glossy, smoother surface and a slightly different grip than matte plastic. These models make sense mainly for people who practice megaminx systematically and want to tune the settings to their preferences. You don't need one to learn your first solve.
Megaminxes vary in size more than 3x3 cubes, and size has a big impact on comfort. The QiYi Galaxy Megaminx V2 comes in a standard size and as a slightly larger L version. The Galaxy also has ridged face edges that make it easier to grip. The sculpted surface of the QiYi QiHeng S2 serves a similar purpose. If you have larger hands or tire quickly during long solves, choose a larger model or one with a more pronounced texture. Smaller, smooth models fit better in smaller hands.
