QiYi QiHeng W Megaminx

QiYi QiHeng W Megaminx

QiYi QiHeng W Megaminx is an affordable, non-magnetic megaminx with a black body and stickers. It has classic, smooth faces without any sculpting, so it looks just like a traditional megaminx. It's a good way to find out whether solving dodecahedrons is for you before you buy a more expensive magnetic model.

What is a megaminx?

A megaminx is shaped like a regular dodecahedron. Each of its 12 pentagonal faces turns, and you solve it much like a 3x3 cube, only with more steps. If you know a beginner method for the 3x3, you'll usually pick up the principles quickly. Your first solve will still take some patience, as it takes noticeably longer than on a cube.

How it turns

The puzzle turns smoothly right out of the box. The pieces have a textured inner surface that helps spread the lube. User opinions are mixed, though. Beginners are usually happy with it, but more experienced solvers report catching and weak reverse corner cutting. Without magnets, the layers don't snap into place on their own, so you need to turn more precisely. A few users also mention that with heavy use the stickers can wear off or peel over time.

Who is it for?

The QiHeng W works well as a first megaminx: as a gift for a child who can already solve a 3x3, or for anyone who wants to learn to solve a megaminx on a small budget. If you want to train for speed, you'll soon notice the limits of this mechanism. In that case, a magnetic model from the QiHeng S2 series or a higher-end megaminx will be a better choice.
