A display is a large screen that connects to a timer. It shows the solve time live, so judges, spectators or a camera can see it. In this category you will find wired and Bluetooth displays from Speed Stacks, QiYi, YuXin and MoYu. They work well at local tournaments, in clubs and schools, for recording or streaming solves, and at home if you want to train in conditions similar to a competition.
A display does not measure time on its own. It only receives data from the timer, so before choosing a model you need to know which timer you already have or plan to buy.
A cable gives you a simple connection with no pairing, but the display has to stay within reach of the cable. Bluetooth lets you place the display further from the station and reduces cable clutter. This matters especially with several stations or in a home recording setup. The version with an adapter is also handy if you have timers from different manufacturers.
You don't need a display for regular practice, because the timer shows the time on its own screen. It makes sense when the result needs to be visible to others. It is useful for organisers of competitions and cubing meetups, people running classes with children and anyone who records their solves. For a younger competitor before their first tournament, it is also a way to get used to everyone seeing their time.
