ShengShou Megaminx

ShengShou Megaminx: the brand's first model

This megaminx was the first dodecahedron in the ShengShou lineup. When it came out, many people learned to solve this puzzle on it. Today there are much more modern designs on the market, but this model still makes sense if you want to try the megaminx on a budget or add a classic model to your collection.

Design and mechanism

The mechanism is simple. It has none of the extra features known from newer designs, such as torpedoes, the pieces that keep the puzzle from popping during fast turning. The pieces have subtle ridges. They improve grip and help you feel the faces when solving against the clock. Tension is set with adjustment screws, so you can tune the puzzle to your liking: looser for speed or tighter for control.

How it turns

For the brand's first megaminx, turning is good. Corner cutting is average compared with the megaminxes made today, so lockups may occur if you turn the faces less precisely. For learning and casual solving, it's more than enough. If you want to chase fast times, consider a newer model. ShengShou offers, for example, the later Aurora and Pearl, or the YuFeng with magnets and Ball-Core.

Who is it for?

It's a great first megaminx when you want to find out whether you'll enjoy this puzzle before buying a more expensive model. It's also a good choice for collectors of older and historically important designs. The model is available with a black or white body.
