MoYu Meilong Megaminx

A budget megaminx from the Meilong series. It is made by MoFangJiaoShi (Cubing Classroom), a MoYu sub-brand that releases affordable versions of popular puzzles. The MoYu Meilong Megaminx is a good choice for your first go at the dodecahedron: it costs less than flagship megaminxes, yet it still has tension adjustment and is approved for official WCA competitions.

Convex centers and grip

What sets the Meilong apart are the convex piece centers. The surfaces are not completely flat, so your fingers hold on to individual pieces better. Buyers point out the noticeable surface texture that makes the puzzle easier to grip. With twelve faces and lots of single-finger moves, this matters, because the puzzle is less likely to slip out of your hands.

How it turns

This Megaminx has no magnets, so the layers don't snap into place on their own. That makes turning freer, but also less "controlled" than in magnetic models. For learning to solve and relaxed solves, it's more than enough. If you start timing yourself and getting faster, you will feel the difference compared to more expensive magnetic megaminxes. Tension is set with adjustment screws. Tightened, they give more stability; loosened, they give better corner cutting and lighter turning. It's worth taking a moment to set it up, because this has a big impact on how the puzzle behaves.

Meilong or Meilong M?

The same series also includes the Meilong Megaminx M, the magnetic version. The magnets help align the layers and give you more control when turning fast. The non-magnetic version is a good fit if you are just learning the megaminx or buying it as another puzzle for your collection. If you plan to train for time regularly, you may want to go straight for the M version.

For beginners who want to try something bigger after the 3x3 cube, and for parents looking for an affordable megaminx for their child. An advanced speedcuber will more likely treat it as a backup puzzle than as a main competition model.
