ShengShou Aurora Megaminx

ShengShou Aurora Megaminx – a non-magnetic dodecahedron with torpedoes and Florian holes

The Aurora series is ShengShou's more refined line. The ShengShou Aurora Megaminx came out in 2016 as a newer, more advanced version of the brand's classic megaminx. The mechanism is classic, spring-based and non-magnetic. Compared with the older ShengShou Megaminx, a few specific things have changed: the edges now have torpedoes, and the pieces feature Florian-style holes and subtle grooves in the corners.

What these changes do

Torpedoes are small tabs hidden inside the edges. They hook onto neighbouring pieces and reduce popping, which means pieces falling out during fast turning. The Florian mod involves cutting away parts of the pieces so the layers pass each other more easily when they are not perfectly aligned. On the Aurora it comes factory-applied in a mild form. This makes turning a little smoother than on its predecessors, but don't expect a big difference in corner cutting. It stays at a similar level to what you know from older ShengShou megaminxes.

Feel and first solves

Users describe the Aurora as a smooth and stable puzzle. It is very hard to take apart, which speaks well for its resistance to popping. Straight out of the box, however, it can be somewhat slow and heavily lubed at the factory. Some people also hear the springs in the core clicking while turning. Loosening the adjustment screws and re-lubing usually helps. This is not a fast megaminx like modern magnetic models. Instead, it offers calm, predictable turning.

Who is it for?

It's a good first megaminx for anyone who wants to get into dodecahedrons without spending a lot. It also works well as a puzzle for learning and casual solving. Speedcubers aiming for fast competition times usually choose newer magnetic models. Megaminx is an official competition event, and the Aurora is allowed in competitions.
