ZePuzzles 11cm Big FTO

ZePuzzles 11cm Big FTO is an enlarged version of the FTO, the Face Turning Octahedron. It is shaped like two pyramids joined at their bases. It has eight triangular faces, and you turn each of them just like a face of a regular cube. It measures about 110 mm, so it is noticeably bigger than typical FTOs. In our shop it is available with a black body.

What is an FTO?

The FTO is sometimes called a "3x3 FTO" because each face is divided into three layers. The puzzle has three types of pieces: 6 corners at the vertices of the octahedron, 12 edges and 24 triangular centers. The face centers are not fixed as they are on a 3x3 cube, and each corner shows the colors of four faces. Because of this, 3x3 cube methods don't carry over one to one. Some of the reasoning helps, but you need to learn separate algorithms for the FTO. In the speedcubing community, the FTO is a popular unofficial event with its own methods and rankings.

The big size in practice

At 11 cm, the puzzle fills your hands and makes it easier to track individual pieces. This can help if you are just learning the FTO. However, this size isn't designed for high TPS or for training to beat your times. For speedsolves, smaller FTOs built for fast turning work better. Think of the Big FTO as a puzzle for relaxed solving at home and an interesting piece for your twisty puzzle collection.
