MF8 Master FTO is a Face Turning Octahedron (FTO) with one more layer than the classic FTO. Here, each face is divided into four layers. The relationship is similar to the one between a 3x3 and a 4x4: there are extra pieces that you first need to pair up into larger blocks, plus new cases to learn. The puzzle was released in 2021. In our shop it is available in the Black version.

How it turns

Straight out of the box, the Master FTO is usually stiff and comes with quite a lot of factory lube. According to reviews, a few solves are enough for the layers to break in and start turning noticeably lighter. Its weakest point is deep moves, where two layers turn at the same time. Halfway through such a turn, stability drops, and if you turn too hard, the corner blocks can pop out. Calmer, more precise moves make a big difference here.

This is not a speedcube. It is better described as a collector's puzzle that you solve for fun and for a new challenge. However, there are not many alternatives to a mass-produced 4-layer FTO on the market, so this model is also used by people who try to set unofficial records on it.

Adjustment and setup

Tension is set with adjustment screws. The springs are in the four fixed centers, while the four "floating" centers have none. Reviewers point out that the factory springs are fairly long and stiff, which makes some layers turn heavier. After taking the puzzle apart, it is worth evening out the tension on all axes. If you enjoy tinkering with your setup, you can also swap the springs for shorter, lighter ones and pick a lube to match.

Who is it for?

Above all, for those who can already solve a regular FTO and are looking for a harder version of the same puzzle. The Master FTO will also make a great addition to the collection of anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles. For your first octahedron, the classic FTO is a better choice. This puzzle is not permitted in official WCA competitions.
