ShengShou FTO M, a magnetic Face Turning Octahedron

ShengShou FTO M is the magnetic version of ShengShou's budget FTO (Face Turning Octahedron). The octahedron has 8 faces, and each of them turns just like a face on a 3x3 cube. However, the mechanism and solving principles differ from a classic cube, so you will need to learn new methods and algorithms. The puzzle has a matte (frosted) surface and a stickerless bright colour scheme, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel.

How it turns

The magnets in the M version are light to medium. They don't snap layers into place as strongly as in more expensive models, but they help you land in position and give a noticeable "click" with every turn. The non-magnetic version has no layer-aligning mechanism at all, so the M version is more comfortable for learning FTO. Users praise the build quality for the price. They also often mention popping, especially centres falling out during fast, aggressive turning, as well as catching on imprecise moves. A popped piece is usually easy to put back in, but this model isn't designed for fast solving at high TPS.

Who is it for?

The FTO M is a sensible choice for your first FTO. It's great for someone who can already solve a 3x3, wants to try a new puzzle and doesn't want to spend a lot on hardware right away. It also works well as a collection piece or as a gift for someone who enjoys unusual puzzles. If you plan to practise timed FTO solves regularly, sooner or later, once you've mastered the method, you'll move on to a more refined model, e.g. one with Ball-Core.
