ZePuzzles Master CTO (Corner-Turning-Octahedron)

ZePuzzles Master CTO is an octahedron with four layers on every axis – the bigger brother of the classic CTO. The name Corner-Turning-Octahedron tells you how this puzzle works: the layers turn around the corners of the octahedron, not around the faces as on the popular FTO. The manufacturer describes it as a CTO in a 4x4x4 layout. The body is 3D printed and black.

CTO vs FTO

Both octahedra look similar, but you solve them in completely different ways. On the FTO, every face is a turning axis. The CTO has six axes, one for each corner, and moves are made in 90-degree steps. Each turn therefore moves different groups of pieces than on the FTO, and you need to find different solving methods. The classic CTO has three layers. The Master version adds a fourth, so there are more pieces and solving takes longer.

3D printed – what to expect

The Master CTO is a small-batch puzzle, not an injection-moulded cube from a speedcube manufacturer. It has no magnets and no tension adjustment system. Turning is usually not as smooth as on a magnetic FTO or CTO. It's better to turn calmly and align the layers carefully than to go for high TPS. Right out of the box, it's worth giving the puzzle a little time to break in.

Who is it for?

For collectors of unusual puzzles, or for those who can already solve a 4x4 and a three-layer CTO or FTO and are looking for something harder. Experience with big cubes and octahedra will come in very handy here. For your first non-cube puzzle, a regular FTO, Skewb Diamond or three-layer CTO is a better choice.
