The Master FTO from MF8 is a version of the FTO (Face Turning Octahedron) with an extra layer. It is an octahedron-shaped shape mod puzzle in which every face turns. On a classic FTO each face has three layers, while here there are four. That is why this puzzle is often called "the 4x4 of FTOs". We stock it in the Stickerless Bright version: the colours are in the plastic, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel.

How it turns

The Master FTO is not a puzzle for speedsolving. It is an interesting challenge for people who already know the regular FTO or other octahedrons. Right out of the box the mechanism can be stiff and heavily lubed at the factory. Users particularly point out double-layer moves, which feel very heavy at first. If you turn too hard, popping can occur. The outer layers work properly, but catching happens more often on the inner layers.

After a few solves the puzzle breaks in and turns noticeably better. Cleaning off the factory lube and applying a thicker lube to the core and pieces improves smoothness even further. At first, turn calmly and precisely until the mechanism settles in.

Size and pieces

The Master FTO is similar in size to a standard FTO, even though it has one more layer. In practice this means the individual pieces are fairly small. The whole puzzle is slightly larger than a regular 3x3 cube and noticeably taller, because of its octahedral shape.

Who is it for?

For collectors and solvers of unusual puzzles who have already mastered the FTO and are looking for a harder version. For your first shape mod puzzle, it is better to choose something simpler, such as a classic FTO or a Skewb Diamond. The Master FTO contains small parts, so it is not intended for children under 7.
