For a long time, the FTO was a puzzle for a small group of enthusiasts, because the choice was mostly limited to non-magnetic models or homemade modifications. DianSheng FTO Magnetic is the first mass-produced magnetic Face Turning Octahedron. It's the puzzle many cubers started with when they got serious about solving the FTO for time. It's an octahedron in which each of the eight faces turns. The mechanism is similar to a 3x3 cube, but it has more axes of rotation, and solving it requires its own algorithms.

How it turns

The factory-installed magnets help the layers settle into place, so turns are more precise than on older non-magnetic FTOs. According to user feedback, the puzzle is fairly fast and feels comfortable in the hand, as it's noticeably smaller than other FTOs on the market. Its rounded corners and small size both contribute to this. According to reviews, it performs well within a fairly narrow tension range, preferably on a slightly tighter setting. On a loose setting, edge popping happens more often. The inside of the pieces has tortoise-shell-shaped grooves that spread the lube and help keep turning smooth. The surface is glossy.

Magnetic or NEO?

DianSheng also makes a newer model, the FTO NEO. It features a Ball-Core, meaning additional magnets in the core, and according to reviews it offers better corner cutting and greater resistance to popping than this model. The standard FTO Magnetic has no Ball-Core and relies solely on the magnets in the pieces. On the other hand, it has a simpler design and costs less. It's more than enough for learning the FTO and casual solving. If stability at high TPS matters to you, take a look at the NEO version.

Who is it for?

For those who already know the 3x3 and want to try the FTO, and for collectors of unusually shaped puzzles. As a first puzzle for a child, the FTO will be too difficult. It's better to start with a classic 3x3 and move on to the FTO later.
