Z-Lube is a water-based cube lube that many cubers buy as an alternative to the popular Maru lube. It has one job: to make your cube faster, quickly. The effect is short-lived, so it works better as a quick way to refresh the mechanism than as a lube that lasts for weeks. The lube comes in a 10 ml bottle.

How water-based lube works

Water-based lubes are usually lighter than silicone lubes. Once applied, they reduce friction between the pieces, so the cube turns noticeably faster. The effect doesn't last long, because the lube dries relatively quickly. That makes Z-Lube handy when your cube has become sluggish or when you want to speed it up before a solving session. It won't replace a lube that stays in the cube for longer.

A faster cube doesn't suit every cuber. If your 3x3 already tends to overshoot, it may be harder to control after you apply a fast lube. It's best to start with a small amount and add more only if the effect is too weak.

Z-Lube or silicone lube?

These two lubes do different jobs, and many people keep both at home. A water-based lube like Z-Lube gives a fast but short-lived effect and is great for speeding up your cube from time to time. Thicker silicone lubes last longer and are more often used to change the feel, for example to make a cube quieter, smoother or more controllable. If speed is your main priority and you don't mind relubing every now and then, Z-Lube is a good choice.
