Zcube 2x2 Time Machine is a shape mod built on a 2x2 cube mechanism. Each face has a round disc that you can turn independently of the layers. First you scramble the cube like a regular 2x2, then you move pieces of the discs between corners by turning them. This makes solving it far more of a brain-teaser than a plain 2x2. The version we offer is stickerless in the bright colour scheme.

How to solve it

Layer moves work exactly as on a classic 2x2, so if you can solve a 2x2, you'll understand the basics right away. The trouble starts with the discs. Once they're scrambled together with the layers, solved corners don't mean a solved cube. You also have to put the disc pieces back together without breaking what you've already solved. Most people solve the 2x2 framework first and deal with the discs afterwards.

It's a typical collector's puzzle for relaxed tinkering, not a cube for setting fast times. It has no magnets, and users point out that the layers should be precisely aligned before each turn. With sloppy, fast turning, catching and even popping can happen easily. It's best to turn this cube calmly. Also, don't force corner twists, as this can damage a piece in 2x2 cubes.

Tension adjustment

Tension is set with adjustment screws. If the layers feel too loose and the cube starts falling apart, tighten the screws slightly. If turning feels too heavy, you can loosen them a little. Out of the box the cube can feel a bit scratchy, and lube usually improves smoothness noticeably.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a 2x2 or 3x3 and want to try something different from yet another speedcubing cube. It also makes a great gift for collectors of unusual puzzles. The Time Machine is not allowed in official competitions. Its large size and design make it unsuitable for speedsolving. For your first cube, choose a regular magnetic 2x2 or 3x3 instead.
