Calvins Puzzle 3-Layers Square-5 Cube is an extended variant of the Square-1, designed by Ge and released by Calvin's Puzzle. The puzzle isn't made with the usual injection-moulding process: both the internal and external pieces are 3D printed. It has a black body with coloured stickers. It's more of a collector's puzzle than a cube for setting times. It's a great pick for anyone who knows the Square-1 well and wants something more challenging.

A Square-1 with three layers

The puzzle keeps the core principle of the Square-1: it changes shape as you turn the layers and make slice moves. However, it has more cuts and pieces than the classic model, so solving it is more complex. Users point out in their reviews that there are a lot of slice moves here, and these are what raise the difficulty the most. If you can't yet solve a regular Square-1 with confidence, master it first.

How it turns

You can hear and feel the 3D printing in your hands. According to buyers' reviews, the turning is fairly smooth, but it comes with a noticeable, slightly scratchy sound typical of printed pieces. The puzzle has no magnets and isn't meant for speedsolving. It's best solved calmly, without high TPS or aggressive turning. Its strength is the logical challenge, not speed.

3 layers or 5 layers?

Calvin's Puzzle has also released the 5-Layers Square-5 Cube. Compared with it, the 3-layer version is a gentler introduction to this family of puzzles. It works well as the next step after the Square-1, while the 5-layer version is for those who want to go even further.

Who is it for?

For experienced cubers who solve the Square-1 and for collectors of unusual puzzles. We don't recommend it as a first cube or as a gift for a beginner child, because the difficulty is high and the printed mechanism needs gentler handling than a typical injection-moulded cube.
