Calvins Puzzle 3x3x5 Fisher Star

Calvins Puzzle 3x3x5 Fisher Star is a shape mod of the 3x3x5 cuboid in its Fisher version. Calvin's has reshaped the pieces so that every 3x3 layer looks like a star. The mechanism is the same as in a regular 3x3x5, but after a few moves the puzzle no longer looks like a cuboid. When solving, you need to restore both the colors and the shape. The variant available in our shop is black.

What solving it is like

Mechanically, it's a 3x3x5 cuboid. The 3x3 layers turn normally by 90°, while the rectangular faces only allow 180° turns. Fisher Star adds shape-shifting on top of that. The arms of the star shift relative to each other, so it's harder to tell where each piece belongs and whether a layer is already in place. If you know a method for the 3x3x5, you'll recognize most of the steps, but identifying the pieces takes much longer here.

This is a collector's and logic puzzle, not a speedcubing cube. The turning is often described as soft (squishy) and prone to catching. This is fairly typical for shape mods of this kind. It's better to turn calmly and align the layers carefully than to aim for high TPS.

Who is it for?

For people who can solve a 3x3 and, ideally, have already mastered a regular 3x3x5 cuboid and are now looking for a harder variant. Fisher Star also works well as a display piece on a shelf of unusual puzzles. For a child's first puzzle or for a beginner, a classic 3x3 cube is a better choice.
