Calvins Puzzle 3x3x5 X-Cube is a shape-shifting puzzle from the 3x3x5 Cuboid series. The very first turn shows you this is no ordinary cube: the protruding pieces move around, and the puzzle loses its shape as you scramble and solve it. It bears the logo of Evgeniy Grigoriev, the designer of the puzzle. We offer it in the Stickerless Bright version, which means no stickers, just coloured plastic.

Where it comes from

The first 3x3x5 cuboid was designed by Aleh in 1989. Evgeniy drew up further variants, and Calvins Puzzle used his drawings to release the whole 3x3x5 Cuboid series. It includes, among others, the Cuboid, L-Cube, T-Cube, Temple-Cube, Trio-Cube and this X-Cube. Puzzle collectors often buy these models as a full set, because each variant has a different shape and comes apart differently while solving.

How it solves

This is not a speedcubing cube. It has no magnets and isn't meant for setting times, but for relaxed solving. The shape changes cause the most trouble, because while solving you have to keep track of both the colours and getting the puzzle back to its original form. Knowing a 3x3 method helps, but it isn't enough on its own. Puzzle Master rates the black-body version 9 on its 10-point difficulty scale.

X-Cube vs Super X-Cube

The same series also includes the Super X-Cube, which is easy to confuse with this model. The Super version has extra round pieces on the flat faces and allows even more possible shapes. This product is the regular X-Cube, without the round faces.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a 3x3, have worked through a few simpler shape mods (e.g. the Mirror Cube or Axis Cube) and want something harder. It's also a great addition to a collection of Calvins 3x3x5 series models. For a child's first shape mod, it's better to choose something simpler.
