The Calvins Puzzle 5-Layers Square-5 Cube is a shape-shifting puzzle from the Square-1 family, which means it changes shape as you solve it. It was designed by a modder known as Ge and released by Calvin's Puzzle. With five layers, you have to keep track of many more pieces than on a classic Square-1. A handmade 3D-printed mod

Unlike typical cubes, the Square-5 is not made in a factory injection mould. Both the internal and external parts are 3D printed, and the puzzle is assembled by hand. It is an original mod rather than a mass-produced item, and that shows in its character. It measures approx. 72 mm and weighs approx. 217 g, so it is fairly large and noticeably heavier in the hand.

How it turns

The distributor describes the turning as smooth, but buyers put it a little differently. Straight out of the box, the mechanism can be stiff and hard to turn. One user writes that after about a week of use the cube turns noticeably smoother. Another points out a scratchy sound while turning, which may bother people who are sensitive to noise. This is not a cube for high TPS and chasing times. It works better when you take your time to figure out its mechanics.

Who is the Square-5 Cube for?

For cubers who solve the Square-1 comfortably and want a harder version of the same puzzle. It will also appeal to collectors of unusual puzzles. There are not as many tutorials for the Square-5 as for puzzles from official events. You will need to rely on a few community tutorial videos or work out the solution yourself. Calvin's also offers the 3-Layers Square-5 Cube with fewer layers. The 5-layer variant is more complex. If you are just starting out with shape-shifting puzzles or looking for a gift for a child, it makes more sense to start with a regular Square-1.
