This Gear 2x2 Cube from Calvin's Puzzle combines a regular 2x2 cube with a gear mechanism. The model is also sold as the Bram & Oskar Gear 2x2 Cube. The idea came from Bram Cohen, and the puzzle was designed by Oskar van Deventer. It's the same duo behind the classic Gear Cube 3x3. The version we offer has a black body and factory-applied stickers in six colors.

How it differs from a regular 2x2 cube

On two axes, the cube turns just like a standard 2x2. The third axis works like a gear cube: when you turn a layer, the gears rotate along with it. There are eight of them in the cube. So when solving, you need to put not only the corners in place but also the gears in the correct position. Knowing a 2x2 method helps, but it isn't enough. In this respect, the cube is closer to gear and cuboid puzzles than to a regular 2x2.

Gear 2x2 Cube or the Plus version?

Calvin's Puzzle has also released the Gear 2x2 Cube Plus. It has 6-tooth gears, exposed sliding pieces (sliders) and eight extra pieces. This cube is the basic version, without those additions. If you're just getting started with gear puzzles, it's a natural starting point. The Plus version is for those who want a puzzle with more pieces.

Who is it for?

This cube is for people who can already solve the 2x2 and 3x3 and are now looking for something other than yet another speed cube. It's also a great fit for collectors of Oskar van Deventer's puzzles and gear cube fans. It isn't a cube for timed speedcubing or a first cube for a child. Here it's all about understanding the mechanism, not TPS. To get started, a regular magnetic 2x2 or 3x3 will be a better choice.
