Calvins Puzzle Inverted House Cube

Calvins Puzzle Inverted House Cube is a shape mod built on a 3x3 cube mechanism, a puzzle shaped like a little house. But the house is upside down: the roof is at the bottom and the base is on top. Just a few moves are enough for the cube to change shape and for the roof, wall and base pieces to get mixed up. This model has a black body and colored stickers.

How solving works

The moves are the same as on a classic 3x3 cube, but the pieces have different shapes. Matching the colors is not enough, because you also have to restore the shape of the house, and the slanted surfaces and asymmetric angles make it harder to tell where each piece should go. Experience with the 3x3 helps a lot, but here the algorithms work on unusual geometry. So you will have to rethink some of the steps instead of just repeating them from memory. Puzzle Master rates the difficulty level as 8, which means "challenging".

Build quality

The body is made of ABS plastic, and the colors are PVC stickers. Turning is smooth, and the cube keeps changing shape as you solve it, so simply watching the house transform is part of the fun. This is a cube for solving and collecting, not for setting times. Once solved, it also looks great on a shelf next to other shape mods.

For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try a different geometry, and for collectors of unusual Calvins Puzzle puzzles. If you don't know any 3x3 solving method yet, it's worth learning one first, because otherwise a shape mod can be frustrating. The Inverted House Cube is the standard 3x3 version.
