Calvins Puzzle Junior Hexagonal Prism Tiled Version is a hexagonal prism puzzle from the Calvin's Puzzle collection, a manufacturer known for unusual shape mods. From the side it looks like a hexagonal drum, but it turns in a completely different way from a layer-based cube. The moves are similar to a Skewb, so after a few turns the coloured pieces get scrambled quickly and the puzzle no longer resembles its original shape.

Tiles instead of stickers

In the Tiled version, the coloured faces are glued-on plastic tiles rather than regular stickers. They are thicker and hold up better to frequent solving, so the colours don't wear off as quickly and the edges peel off less often than with thin stickers. The body is black, so the tiles stand out clearly against it.

How it solves

If you know the Skewb, you'll recognise the turning style, but knowing Skewb methods alone isn't enough. The hexagonal shape and the different piece layout mean you'll have to find your own move sequences. The prism is best suited to relaxed, recreational solving and working out the solution yourself. It isn't a puzzle designed for speed or WCA competitions, so there's no point comparing it with speed cubes in terms of TPS or corner cutting.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve the 3x3 and the Skewb and are now looking for something that makes them think again, rather than just executing memorised algorithms. It also makes a great addition to a shape mod collection, as its unusual shape looks great on a shelf. For a child's first puzzle, a classic 3x3 cube is a better choice. The Junior Hexagonal Prism is for those who have already mastered the basics.
