The Oskar Sloppy 3x3x3 Cube by Calvin's Puzzle is a cube designed by Oskar van Deventer in which the axes of rotation aren't perpendicular to each other. As a result, the cuts look crooked, and even scrambling the cube is a tough challenge. This version has a black body and stickers in 6 colors.
At first glance, it looks like a 3x3 cube that someone put together crooked. The cuts aren't parallel to each other, and the layers seem to be shifted. But this isn't a manufacturing defect. It's the whole idea behind this puzzle. The Oskar Sloppy 3x3x3 Cube was designed by Oskar van Deventer and is mass-produced by Calvin's Puzzle. This version has a black body and stickers in the six classic colors.
The Sloppy Cube is a shape mod of the Melty D puzzle invented by Bram Cohen. The idea of giving it a cube shape came from David Tzur. In a regular 3x3 cube, the axes of rotation are perpendicular to each other. Here, they deviate from a right angle by a few degrees. That's why the cube looks sloppy, even though all its faces are identical and the pieces fit together precisely.
Because the axes aren't perpendicular, once you turn one face, the cuts of the neighboring layers no longer line up. Some moves become blocked. The puzzle's tagline says that most people can't even scramble it, and there's some truth to that. Just getting to a proper scramble means searching for sequences that can actually be performed. Only then does the solving begin, and the standard 3x3 method won't simply do the job.
For collectors of unusual puzzles, fans of Oskar van Deventer's designs and cubers who already know the regular 3x3 and want to take on something completely different. This is a cube for relaxed tinkering, not for speedcubing: it has no magnets and isn't tuned for fast solving. It's not a good choice as a first cube for a beginner or a child, but it looks great on a shelf.
