Calvin's Puzzle Timur Gear Skewb EXTREME

Timur Gear Skewb EXTREME is a gear puzzle based on the Skewb. It was designed by Timur Evbatyrov and is produced by Calvin's Puzzle. It is a harder variant of the regular Timur Gear Skewb. The puzzle has the shape of a Skewb and turns around its corners, but the centers and corners contain gears. As you turn, the pieces catch on each other and mesh together, so the puzzle behaves differently from a classic Skewb. This version has a black body.

How it differs from a regular Skewb

In a classic Skewb, each turn moves half of the puzzle and that's it. In a gear Skewb, the gears on the centers and corners additionally rotate pieces with every move, pieces that in a regular Skewb would simply shift position. Because of this, familiar algorithms are not enough. You have to keep track of how each move sets the gears, and you will often need to work out your own method. Knowing how to solve a regular Skewb helps, but it won't solve the problem for you.

The EXTREME version is a harder variant of the Timur Gear Skewb. If the regular gear Skewb no longer gives you any trouble, this model will give you more to figure out.

How it turns

This is a mechanical puzzle, not a speedcubing puzzle. The gear mechanism works differently from modern Skewbs. Fast turning is out of the question here, and you can feel the pieces meshing as you turn. The Gear Skewb EXTREME is meant to be solved calmly and thoughtfully, not against the clock. If you are looking for a Skewb for practice and competitions, choose a classic speedcubing model.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a Skewb and want to test themselves on something harder. Also for fans of gear puzzles and collectors of unusual puzzles from smaller manufacturers such as Calvin's Puzzle. As a child's first puzzle, a regular Skewb or a simpler gear cube is a better choice. The EXTREME version can easily discourage someone who is just starting out.
