A Calvin's Puzzle 3x3 cube in which each of the six faces rotates only within a 270° range. You solve it with familiar algorithms, but some moves have to be done in the opposite direction. It's the gentlest version in the TomZ Constrained Cube series, in stickerless bright colors.
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary 3x3 cube in stickerless bright. The difference shows up as soon as you start turning. On the TomZ Constrained Cube 270, each of the six faces can only rotate within a 270-degree range. You can't make a full turn in one direction, because stops inside the cube won't let you. The puzzle was designed by Tom van der Zanden (hence "TomZ" in the name) and is mass-produced by Calvin's Puzzle.
The center of each face rotates around a gear mounted on the core, and that gear defines the range of motion. With 270 degrees, a face can reach all four positions, but sometimes you have to get there "the long way round". If U is blocked at a given moment, you do U' three times. Logically, it's still a regular 3x3, so you don't need any new algorithms. What changes is the execution: you have to keep track of where each face is within its range, and your learned fingertricks keep running into the stops. For anyone who solves the 3x3 from muscle memory, that's the main challenge.
The series comes in several variants that differ in how far the faces can rotate:
Don't confuse this model with the 270 & 3x3x3 Hybrid version. There, only two faces are restricted and the mechanism is different.
For people who can solve a 3x3 and want to try something different without learning a new method. It works well as an introduction to the Constrained series before the 180 and 90 versions, or as a prank gift for a speedcuber friend. It's a puzzle for collecting and fun, not for setting times. The cube has no magnets. If you're just learning to solve, a regular 3x3 cube will be a better choice.
