A 5x5 shape mod with rounded outer layers, designed by Tony Fisher and produced by Calvins Puzzle in the Overlapping Cube series. It combines the shape of a spherical 5x5 and the Overlapping Cube. The stickerless bright version is for those who can already solve a 5x5.
Calvins Puzzle Tony Pineapple Cube is a 5x5 shape mod with rounded outer layers. Its shape combines two designs by Tony Fisher: the spherical 5x5 (Tony Ball) and the Tony Overlapping Cube. That's why it looks neither like a regular cube nor like a ball, and from the side it really does look a bit like a pineapple. The version available in our shop is stickerless bright, meaning colored plastic with no stickers.
The Pineapple belongs to the Tony Overlapping Cube series. In the same series, Calvins Puzzle has also put the Overlapping Cube, Ball-in-Cube and Mini 5x5x5 Ball into mass production. Tony Fisher made the first handmade copies of these puzzles in 2012. Later, Evgeniy transferred his drawings into SolidWorks files, which became the basis for the factory version.
Inside, there's a 5x5 mechanism, so if you know a 5x5 method (most often reduction: centers, edges, then solving it like a 3x3 with possible parity cases), you already have the basics. The difficulty comes from the shape. The rounded layers make the puzzle sit differently in your hands than a classic 5x5, and recognizing pieces on such an unusual shape takes some getting used to.
This is a puzzle for relaxed solving and for your collection, not a cube for timed practice. If you care about high TPS, stable turning and tension adjustment, a regular speedcubing 5x5 is a better choice.
For collectors of Tony Fisher's designs and for anyone who can solve a 5x5 and is looking for something different from yet another cube. We don't recommend it as a first puzzle: without knowing how to solve a 5x5, it's hard to solve. The manufacturer recommends it for ages 12 and up.
