A 3x3 shape mod designed by Troy Robinson, shaped like a star with truncated tips, on a black body. Inside it runs on a 3x3 mechanism, but the unusual, multi-colored pieces make it hard to work out how they should be oriented in the solved state. Knowing how to solve a 3x3 will come in handy.
A star puzzle designed by Troy Robinson and produced by Calvin's Puzzle. Its shape resembles two Pyraminxes pushed into each other. In this version the tips of the star are cut off (truncated), so the puzzle is more compact than the regular Troy 3D-Star. Calvins Puzzle Troy Truncated 3D-Star is a 3x3 shape mod. Inside, it runs on a standard 3x3x3 mechanism and has the same number of pieces as a regular cube, but from the outside it looks nothing like one.
The moves themselves are ordinary layer turns, just like on a 3x3. The catch is that the edges and centers have unusual shapes and often carry several colors. This makes it hard to tell at a glance which piece is which and how it should be oriented in the solved state. The puzzle is solved when every triangular face of the star shows a single color. There are four colors, and each one appears on two opposite faces.
The star can easily confuse someone who only knows the classic 3x3. Near the end of the solve you may run into situations that look like parity, even though they are actually caused by pieces being matched incorrectly. That's why you need to know how to solve a 3x3 and understand how its mechanism works, not just remember algorithms.
Both versions work the same way; they differ only in shape. Troy's classic star has sharp points and a more striking look. The truncated version is more compact. According to users, it sits better in the hands, is easier to turn and easier to take with you.
This is a non-magnetic puzzle, not a speedcubing cube. Don't expect the speed or corner cutting of a modern 3x3. Opinions on its turning are mixed: some descriptions say it turns smoothly, while others rate it as rather average. It's good enough for relaxed solving, and a few drops of lube usually improve the turning noticeably.
For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants something new, and for shape mod collectors. It also makes a good gift for someone who enjoys logic puzzles more than chasing times. If you're just starting out, master the classic 3x3 cube first.
