Gem Cube VI is the sixth puzzle in the Gem series, in which DaYan gives twisty puzzles the shape of cut gemstones. DaYan Gem Cube VI has 30 faces: 6 large octagons and 24 smaller, almost regular pentagons. This shape is a truncated triakis octahedron. Mechanically, it is a shape mod of the Wheel of Wisdom with extra pieces familiar from the Crystal Pyraminx. The puzzle was designed by Daqing Bao, the founder of DaYan, and went into production in 2014. We sell the version with a black body.

How it turns

Gem VI turns around six axes and does not jumble. This means there are no turns by unusual angles that throw the shape out of alignment and block some moves. In this respect it is easier to handle than some other models in the Gem series.

To be clear, though, this is a collector's puzzle, not a speedcubing cube. According to users, it turns stiffly straight out of the box. On top of that, the small Crystal Pyraminx-style pieces can pop out if you turn it too aggressively. With time and calm turning you can get this under control, but don't expect the smoothness of a 3x3 cube. The stickers on the smaller faces are small and may shift or peel off over time.

Difficulty

Gem VI is a demanding puzzle. Experience with unusual puzzles and the ability to build your own commutators will make it easier. Coming straight from your first 3x3 cube, it is a very big step up. If you have already solved a few shape mods or puzzles such as the Pyraminx Crystal or Megaminx, you will find an interesting, long challenge here. People who have mastered Gem VI often list it among the most satisfying puzzles to solve.
