DianSheng 3-layer cylinder

DianSheng 3-layer cylinder is a shape mod of a regular 3x3 cube: a puzzle built on a 3x3 mechanism but shaped like a cylinder on the outside. The top and bottom faces are flat, and the sides are rounded. The puzzle has a black body.

How it works

Inside, it has the same mechanism as a classic 3x3 cube: three layers on each axis, with centers, edges and corners. Only the outer shape is different. The pieces have different shapes, so after a few moves the cylinder loses its form and starts to look like an irregular shape. That is why we have also placed this puzzle in our shape-shifting category.

You solve it much like a 3x3 cube. If you know the layer-by-layer method or CFOP, you can solve the cylinder with the same algorithms. The hardest part is recognizing the pieces: the rounded sides and cut corners don't look like a cube, so you need to get used to the new look. At the end of the solve, check that the puzzle has returned to its cylinder shape, not just that the colors match.

Who is it for?

This cylinder is best for someone who can already solve a 3x3 cube and wants to try something different without learning a new method. It's a good first step into shape mods before moving on to more difficult shape-shifting puzzles. It also makes a great addition to a collection of unusual twisty puzzles.

This is not a speedcubing puzzle, but a puzzle for casual solving. If you're looking for a fast 3x3 to beat your times, choose a typical speedcube. If you're buying a gift for a child who can't solve a 3x3 yet, it's better to start with a regular cube and come back to the cylinder later.
