Diansheng 6-corner-only

This puzzle looks completely different from a 3x3 cube, but inside it is still the same mechanism. DianSheng 6-corner-only is a 3x3 shape mod in the form of a double pyramid with a hexagonal base (hexagonal dipyramid). It is one of several similar modifications of the classic cube that DianSheng released in 2015. Its sister model is the 4-corner-only, which works the same way and differs only in shape.

How to solve the DianSheng 6-corner-only

The layers turn just like on a regular 3x3 cube, so if you can solve a 3x3, you can solve this puzzle too. It is harder at first only because the irregular shape makes it difficult to recognise which piece is where, and the shape changes a lot while you solve it. After a few solves, this stops getting in the way. That makes it a good first shape-shifting puzzle for anyone who already knows the 3x3.

Mechanism and turning

The mechanism is simple and has no magnets, but it is perfectly adequate for a modification of the classic cube. Don't expect the feel of a modern speedcube. Users report that turning can be stiff and that lockups happen from time to time. It is better to turn calmly and align the layers carefully, because aggressive, forceful turning makes it easier to damage something. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws.

Stickers and packaging

The faces have medium-quality stickers. There are quite a few colours, but they are easy to tell apart. The puzzle comes in a nice box with windows that show the product, so it also makes a good gift.

For people who can solve a 3x3 and want to try something different, and for puzzle collectors. This is not a puzzle for breaking records or for competitions, as it is not permitted in official WCA competitions.
