DianSheng Case cube

DianSheng Case cube is a shape-shifting puzzle based on a 3x3 cube mechanism. It looks like a cut-up box or suitcase and is not a cube: one side is clearly longer than the others. After a few moves it loses its shape, so when scrambled it looks much more chaotic than a regular cube. DianSheng released this model in 2015. It is available in two body colours: black and white.

How to solve it

In terms of method, it is still a 3x3. If you can solve a regular cube, you can handle this one too. The challenge is that the pieces come in different sizes and some of them carry several stickers. Because of this, the puzzle looks more complicated than it really is, and some colours are harder to spot. Some buyers expect a completely new mechanism based on the photos, so it is better to know from the start that this is a 3x3 shape mod.

This is not a speedcubing cube. Corner cutting is very limited, so you need to align the layers carefully before each turn, otherwise lockups occur. Two extremes keep coming up in user reviews: some find the cube too stiff out of the box, others too loose. You can adjust the turning with the tension screws. If the puzzle feels loose and unstable, tighten them. If it turns heavily, loosen them a little.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a 3x3 and want to try something different without learning new algorithms. It is also a good addition to a collection of shape-shifting puzzles. It is not permitted in official WCA competitions. For your first cube, a classic 3x3 cube is a better choice, because with the Case cube it is harder to see what is happening on the puzzle.
