On large non-magnetic cubes, layers easily stop halfway through a turn, and with twelve layers on every axis these small misalignments add up quickly. DianSheng Galaxy 12x12 M is a magnetic 12x12 cube from the Galaxy series. Distributors present it as the first mass-produced magnetic 12x12. It measures 87 mm, is stickerless and comes in two internal versions: Black Internals and Primary Internals.

How it turns

The magnets are light. Instead of the strong "click" you know from a 3x3, they help the layer snap into place, so you need to realign it by hand less often before the next move. Users often say the cube turns smoothly for such a large puzzle and that corner cutting on the outer layers is very good. Some add that thanks to the magnets they turn noticeably faster than on non-magnetic big cubes. The outer layers are wider than the inner ones, which makes it easier to get a secure grip when turning slices.

Keep in mind, though, that this is still a 12x12. During long solves your hands get tired, and reaching the middle layers takes some getting used to. Some users also report that the cube needs lubing out of the box to turn as smoothly as it should.

Black or Primary Internals?

The mechanism is the same in both versions; the only difference is the colour of the plastic inside. Black Internals has a black interior, while Primary Internals has coloured internals matching the faces. With coloured internals, you see fewer dark gaps between the pieces while turning. The choice is a matter of taste.

Who is it for?

This cube is for cubers who have already mastered a 6x6 or 7x7 and want to try a much bigger cube. It also fits nicely into a collection of DianSheng magnetic big cubes. Even experienced solvers usually need several dozen minutes for a solve, so the 12x12 M is more of a cube for relaxed solving and collecting than for daily practice. It's a poor choice as a child's first cube. It's better to start with a 3x3 and then gradually move on to bigger sizes.
