A magnetic 8x8 cube from DianSheng in the Ball-Core version, with a magnetic core that pulls the corners inward. As a result, the layers snap into place more clearly and the cube is more stable than the standard version. It measures 67.8 mm, has medium-strength magnets and wider outer layers, and comes with a black or light-colored interior.

The Galaxy 8x8 M from DianSheng was the first mass-produced 8x8 cube with factory-installed magnets. The DianSheng Galaxy 8x8 M Ball-Core is a newer version of this cube. In addition to the magnets in the pieces, it has a magnetic core that pulls the corners towards the center. At 67.8 mm, it is fairly small for an 8x8 and sits comfortably in your hands during a long solve.
Both versions share the same mechanism, medium-strength magnets and wider outer layers. The difference is inside. In the Ball-Core version, the corners are additionally pulled towards a spherical magnetic core. This makes the cube "snap" into place more clearly and keeps it more stable as the layers align. With eight layers this matters, because a single misaligned layer can easily lead to a lockup. The Ball-Core version is also a few grams heavier. If you prefer a lighter, less magnetic feel, the standard version may be enough for you.
Users describe the turning as smooth, with a soft, slightly cushioned feel. The outer layers get the most praise. Straight out of the box, individual cubes can vary. Some are rather tight, and the inner layers turn more slowly than the outer ones. Adjusting the tension with the screws and applying lube usually helps. Corner cutting is decent for a big cube. However, if you turn very aggressively or push corner cutting too far, lockups and pops can occur. It performs best with calm, accurate turning.
The variants differ only in the color of the plastic inside the cube. Black Internals has a black interior, while Primary Internals has a light-colored one. The mechanism, magnets and feel are the same in both, so you simply choose by looks.
For those who already solve the 6x6 or 7x7 and want to try an 8x8. Also for anyone looking to replace an older, non-magnetic 8x8. The magnets and the Ball-Core help keep the layers aligned, so you get fewer lockups during a long solve. The 8x8 is not an official WCA event, so this is a cube for solving for fun and for collecting. For a first cube, including for a child, a 3x3 is a better choice.
