Diansheng S3M 3x3

Diansheng S3M 3x3 is a 2021 model that was DianSheng's flagship 3x3 cube at the time. It is a magnetic cube with classic springs, strong magnets and a generous set of extras. It has a standard size of 55.5 mm, so it fits comfortably in most people's hands.

How it turns

In terms of speed, the S3M sits between mid-range and high-end. It is not a cube that runs away from your fingers, but it is not sluggish either. Corner cutting is very good, and the extended corners help keep it stable during fast turning. The magnets are strong and clearly snap the layers into place. This comes at a price, though: your fingers may get tired during longer practice sessions. If you prefer weaker magnets, keep this in mind.

Opinions about the cube out of the box are mixed. Some users describe its feel as dry and fairly flexible. Setting the tension and lubing the cube at the start usually improves its performance noticeably.

Adjustment and springs

Adjustment is done with traditional screws, but the springs sit in capsules designed to reduce friction during turning. The cube has no separate compression adjustment, so you only set the tension. On the other hand, the set includes spare springs that are stiffer than the stock ones, together with screws and washers. This lets you do a spring swap and set the cube up for more control. Extra centers with center caps let you change its look.

S3M or S3M 2022?

The Solar S3M 2022 is a separate, newer model. It is lighter (approx. 70 g), has a dual adjustment system (tension and 5 compression settings) and is also available in a MagLev version. The 2021 S3M has simpler adjustment but comes with more accessories in the box.

Who is it for?

For someone who already has their first cube behind them and wants a magnetic 3x3 with strong magnets, stable performance and the option to swap springs. The cube is legal for official competitions. Speedcubers looking for very light turning or extensive adjustment options will find models better suited to their needs.
