The DianSheng Shield is a 3x3 shape mod in the form of a hexagonal shield that changes shape with every move. You solve it just like a regular 3x3, so it makes a great first shape-shifting puzzle and a nice addition to your collection. Available with a black or white body.
The DianSheng Shield is a 3x3 shape mod in the form of a hexagonal prism, a solid with eight faces. Its shape resembles a shield, hence the name. Underneath, though, it is a regular 3x3 cube, so if you know any method for solving the classic cube, you can solve the Shield too. Among shape-shifting puzzles, it is one of the easier ones. In terms of construction, it is closely related to the DianSheng Blade Cube.
The pieces come in different shapes and sizes, so after the first few moves the cube loses its regular form and changes shape with every turn. This makes it harder to tell individual pieces apart and keep track of where each one goes. The algorithms are the same as on a 3x3, but your eye needs time to get used to the new shape. At the end, you also need to pay attention to center orientation, because the shape shows how the centers are positioned.
The mechanism is simple and works well for this type of puzzle. Turning is decent and the pieces move smoothly, although smoothness is about average. There is some corner cutting, but only when a layer is slightly misaligned, and with noticeable resistance. You need to align the layers precisely, otherwise lockups occur. Some users report that the center caps can pop out during more forceful turning. With the adjustment screws, you can set the tension to suit your turning style. This is not a cube for setting fast times but a puzzle for relaxed solving, and used that way it offers plenty of fun.
For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 cube and wants to try something different without learning new algorithms. The Shield also works well as a first shape mod in your collection and as an interesting display piece for your shelf. This puzzle is not permitted in official WCA competitions.

Good idea - bad about the execution.
