DianSheng Solar 6x6x6

DianSheng Solar 6x6x6 is part of the Solar series. With this line, DianSheng, previously known mainly for unusual puzzles, entered the speedcubing market. The series covers sizes from 2x2 to 7x7 and was meant to be affordable from the very start. This 6x6 cube has a standard size of 65 mm and comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme. The colours are in the plastic itself, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel.

Your first 6x6 cube without a big spend

A 6x6 cube has no fixed centers. You first solve the centers, then pair up the edges, and finally finish the cube like a regular 3x3. This is the reduction method. Along the way you'll run into the same parities as on a 4x4. If you've already solved a 4x4 and a 5x5, you'll quickly get the hang of it. The Solar 6x6x6 works well for learning and casual solving: you can find out whether 6x6 is for you before buying a more expensive model.

What to expect

This is a budget cube, and you should keep that in mind. More expensive 6x6 cubes usually have stronger magnets, advanced layer-guiding systems and more adjustment options, which translates into stability during fast turning. According to cubers, the big cubes in the Solar series turn lightly and smoothly but are less stable than newer designs. DianSheng only improved this in the later Galaxy series. With more precise turning, it doesn't get in the way of solving. At an aggressive pace, however, lockups may occur.

A little breaking in and some lube help at the start, especially on the edges. Big cubes usually change after a dozen or so solves.

Who is it for?

This cube is a good fit for cubers who want to start their 6x6 journey or need a cheap spare for their collection or for travel. Speedcubers aiming for fast times will be better served by a flagship model with stronger magnetic layer guidance.
