A budget magnetic 4x4 cube from the Solar series, in a UV-coated version. The DianSheng Solar S4M UV comes with factory-installed magnets, so there's nothing to add or modify. It differs from the standard S4M in its finish: the plastic is glossy and gives you a better grip. The cube is stickerless and comes in two internal colour versions: Black and Primary.

How it turns

In user and retailer reviews, the S4M comes across as a fast, snappy cube with strong magnets. The layers clearly "snap" into place. Turning is smooth right out of the box, and corner cutting is good for this price range. Some people say the cube is a bit tight at first and turns better after slightly loosening and lubing it. Keep this in mind if you want a looser setup right away.

Construction

• 96 factory-installed magnets. They help align the layers and reduce lockups during faster turning.
• "Tortoise shell" shaped pieces. The manufacturer uses this shape to make turning smoother and help the lube spread better inside.

UV or standard?

The mechanism and magnets are the same in both versions; the difference is the surface. The UV version is very glossy and has noticeably more grip. This helps if the cube tends to slip in your hands. The standard S4M has a regular finish without a coating. If you prefer a drier, less "sticky" surface, the non-UV version may suit you better.

The Solar S4M UV makes the most sense for people moving from 3x3 to bigger cubes, and for casual solvers who want a magnetic 4x4 without spending a lot of money. A parent looking for a first decent 4x4 cube for their child gets a ready-to-solve magnetic model here. A speedcuber looking for a flagship 4x4 with features such as MagLev or core magnets should look at more expensive models, as the S4M is not advertised with such features.
