DianSheng Squished 3x3: a flattened, shape-shifting 3x3 cube

DianSheng Squished 3x3 is a shape mod built on a standard 3x3 mechanism. It looks like a cube that someone has gently squashed: low and wide. When solved, it has a regular shape. After a few moves the layers shift and the puzzle turns into an irregular form that a classic cube could never take.

How do you solve it?

The mechanism is a standard 3x3, so the methods and algorithms you already know are all you need. The challenge is that the shape is misleading. When scrambled, the puzzle looks completely different from a regular cube, and the irregular faces can easily fool your eyes. If you can already solve a 3x3, it's a great way to refresh your solving without learning a new method.

Inside, there are concave grooves and friction-reducing surfaces. They are designed to reduce catching of the pieces while turning. However, this is not a cube for breaking records. The Squished has a different role: it's a brain teaser and an eye-catching desk piece, not gear for high TPS.

Non-magnetic version

This variant has no magnets. The layers don't "snap" into place on their own, so you need to align them more carefully by hand, and the turning feels looser than in a magnetic version. For regular, relaxed solving, that's perfectly fine. If you're used to magnetic speed cubes, you'll notice the difference in layer alignment precision.

Who is it for?

The Squished 3x3 is a great choice if you can already solve a classic cube and want to try your first shape mod. It also fits nicely into a collection of unusual 3x3 puzzles.
