The DianSheng timer in the Mold A version has a classic, symmetrical housing and measures time to an accuracy of 0.001 s. It stores your last 3 times, has a port for an external display and holes for mounting on a mat. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which are not included.
Diansheng Timer (Mold A) is a simple speedcubing timer for timing your solves at home, at school or at club meetups. Mold A, also called Type A, has a classic, symmetrical housing. The more rounded, ergonomic version is Mold B. The timer comes in black and white.
The timer works like typical speedcubing timers. You place both hands on the pads on either side of the housing, and the time starts when you lift them. Once you've solved the cube, you put your hands back down and the timer stops. Your hands start and finish in the same place every time, so results from different sessions are easier to compare than with a phone stopwatch. The result is displayed to an accuracy of 0.001 s.
The timer stores your last 3 times. That's enough to compare a few solves in a row without writing each one down. For calculating averages such as ao5 or ao12, and for longer sessions, you'll still want an app or a spreadsheet.
The bottom of the timer has holes for mounting it on a mat. This keeps the timer in one place so it doesn't slide when you stop it hard. It also has a port for connecting an external display that shows the time in large digits. This comes in handy in classes or at unofficial competitions, when spectators want to see the result too.
According to distributors, the two versions differ mainly in the shape of the housing. Mold A has a straight, symmetrical form that resembles classic timers. Mold B has more contoured, rounded hand pads. It's best to choose the shape that better suits the way you place your hands.
For those who are starting to time their solves and want a physical timer instead of an app, and for parents buying their child's first speedcubing gear. The timer also works well as a second, backup timer or as equipment for a school or club. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which are not included.
