Fangshi 2x2 Ghost Cube is a 2x2 shape mod, a cube that changes its shape as you turn it. The mechanism is the same as in a regular 2x2, but the cuts run at different angles and in different places than on a classic cube. As a result, every piece has a different shape and different dimensions. All sides are the same colour, so you solve the cube by shape alone. After just a few moves, the cube turns into an irregular solid.

What makes it challenging

On a regular 2x2 cube, the colours show you right away where each piece belongs. Here you get no such hint. You have to recognise the pieces by the size of their faces and by how far they stick out of the shape. It works similarly to the Mirror Cube, but the cuts on the Ghost Cube are even less obvious. That's why even people who can solve a 2x2 from memory usually have to rethink the solution from scratch. 2x2 algorithms are still useful, but most of the work lies in figuring out what needs to be done.

How it turns

This is a puzzle, not a speedcubing cube, so there's no point comparing it to magnetic 2x2 cubes. According to user reviews, it turns properly and fairly smoothly. During fast turning, especially when the cube is heavily deformed, lockups and catching may occur. It's best solved at a calm pace, carefully aligning the layers before each move.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a classic 2x2 or 3x3 and wants something that can only be solved by thinking it through. The Ghost Cube also makes a great addition to a puzzle collection, alongside the Mirror Cube and other shape mods. For a child's first cube, a regular 2x2 or 3x3 is a better choice. Without knowing the basics, the Ghost Cube may discourage rather than intrigue.
